The stove belongs in the south-east, and the person cooking faces east. Water sources such as the sink are kept away from the stove, since fire and water are opposing elements and are best not placed side by side.
Where the kitchen cannot move, the stove and sink positions within the room still make a difference, along with good ventilation and light.
